A deep blue-violet dye commonly used in denim. It was originally obtained from the Indigofera plant, but today it is also created synthetically using coal tar. The Civil War “Boys in Blue,” or the Union soldiers, were so called because their uniforms were made from indigo-dyed wool cloth.
